Toshiba officially conceded the format war in February 2008, but plenty of people thought it wasn’t really over until Toshiba put out a Blu-ray player. A year and a half later, that day has finally come. This morning, Toshiba announced the BDX2000, an entry-level Blu-ray player ($250 list price) to be released in November.
While we’re always glad to see more competition in the Blu-ray space, the BDX2000 doesn’t bring anything special to the table. It supports all the basic features, like Profile 2.0 compatibility and onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio, but there are currently no premium features, such as integrated Wi-Fi or streaming media services like Netflix. There’s also no onboard memory, so you’ll need to add storage using the player’s SD card slot to use BD-Live features.

With its new $300 price tag, the PS3 Slim has been selling like crazy, and the fact that it’s an excellent Blu-ray player is at least part of the reason.
Since Blu-ray’s inception, the PS3 has been our reference Blu-ray player, only recently getting edged out of the top spot by the Oppo BDP-83. Now that the new 3.00 firmware has been released, we’ve had some time to put the PS3 Slim through our Blu-ray testing suite.

If you have been waiting for Blu-ray player prices to fall, wait no more. The high-def format now features several players under $200 with one as low as $116 at Amazon.com.
The price drop has helped drive a sharp increase in Blu-ray sales this year, with some estimates saying that as many as six million standalone Blu-ray players will be sold before year’s end.
Likewise, Blu-ray disc prices have fallen as well, with many new titles available for around $20.
